3 ways to teach without being preachy
When you replace assumptions with storytelling, people listen more.
No, I’m not supporting Mary Poppins and suggesting a “spoonful of sugar.” We’re not dispensing medicine here.
But my hackles rise when I get a message that comes across as, well, preach-y.
You probably know what I mean. Condescending. Talking down to you. I always feel like writing back, “Excuse me, I’m not five years old anymore. Give it to me straight.”
But straight information doesn’t mean “dull it down.” And there are ways to wordsmith your content so people will enjoy reading it … and you’ll be smiling to yourself as you write.
Most of us create content with the goal of providing information.
We have expertise in an area and we want to share via blog posts, email messages, webinars, and courses.
But sometimes we get warning signals, such as …
…you fall asleep editing your own content (I’ve done this)
…you find yourself writing, “you should…” or “you need to…” over and over again (been there too)
