One problem with taking charge is that we hear so many testimonials from people who say, “I hired Marketing Coach X and listen to his advice. My business went from $300 a month to $30,000 a month.” Usually they’re leaving out a few steps, like, “I already had ten years of sales training and a killer product our market was starving for.”

It’s also helpful to remember, “To a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” So if your coach is big on social media, she’ll advise you to increase your social media presence.

I’ve written elsewhere that your best marketing coach is your own intuition. And as you say, “When you ask your own questions, you’re bound to get a lot of replies.” And while I’m pretty left-brained and avoid woo-woo, I’d add that when you start asking your own questions, the answers start to appear all around you (probably because you’re more attuned to them).
