Make your origin story more passionate!
The purpose of an origin story is to show your audience one (or both) of two things.
One: Why you are so passionate about what you do. Why do you care?
Two: Why are you qualified to be an expert in what you do?
It’s not to tell more about you. Were you nervous and worried about getting started as an entrepreneur? Were you broke and desperate? Were you burned out but highly successful in your corporate life?
Those are good stories if they relate to what you do in your business. They are also good if you want people to see you as human.
But they’re *not* good as a way to introduce yourself to new people in your community.
In this Strategic Storytelling podcast episode, I talk with another copywriter, Nicole Kepic,, about using personal stories in business. We talk about her origin story and how it doesn’t do her justice.
Nicole talks about the impact she makes on her clients. You can hear her get excited for her clients as she demonstrates how good copy can change your business. (Needless to say, I agree!)
We talked about some basic principles of copywriting, like “Clear is better than clever.” And we talked about how Nicole uses personal stories in her emails in exactly the right way. While most of us copywriters are Educator archetypes, Nicole is a Role Model.
And it works! She’s very successful as a copywriter for women entrepreneurs…a big change in her role from copywriting for big-name, big-company corporate accounts.
