A pitcher knows exactly where to throw the ball because he studies the batters. A great guest pitch means studying the host.
In the last 2 years, I’ve been on the receiving end of many pitches. I started a podcast, grew my blog, and was asked to coordinate a speaker series for my business school alumni.
For most of my life, I’ve been on the other side. I studied tips on “how to write a great pitch.”
But I only recently realized how easily business people — even those with considerable experience — can toss something together and expect to be invited.

A professional with multiple degrees and accomplishments sent the email equivalent of a glossy folder with inserts. Someone had put a lot of energy into writing up the person’s qualifications. They included headshots and a bio.
